Grants module underlying field definitions
This article provides additional information on the intended use of the default underlying fields found in the Grants module under the Grant type. Your institution may need to provide metadata for some/all of these fields as part of a data migration or feed.
Is-Application
A field to record whether the grant is at application stage or not. Users may wish to add information to Elements on grant applications that have been submitted to funders but have have not yet been awarded.
Application Date
The date that the grant application was submitted to the funder.
Institution
This field records the name of the institution awarded the grant. It also allows a user to add a grant to Elements which they were awarded when they were at a different institution to the Elements instance they are reporting in.
Abstract
Just like publications most grants will have and abstracts that outlines the focus of the research - this is a field to record that information.
Scheme
A field to record the funding scheme the grant relates to. To administer a large number of grants, funders (usually large ones) will have separate schemes for different topics etc. The scheme is something that is defined by the funder. For an example of the Wellcome Trust methodology please see: https://wellcome.ac.uk/funding/scheme-finder?field_scheme_type_tid=91 .
Programme
This field records details of the programme the grants relates to. Programmes are generally considered longer or larger pieces of work. E.g. multiple grants to different institutions may all contribute to a single programme. Again, use of this term is very funder specific. For an example from the Medical Research Council please see: https://mrc.ukri.org/funding/how-we-fund-research/programme-grant/ .
Sub-Programme
As per the field above, except this is a field to store details of the sub-programme the grant relates to. This is likely to be set by the funder.
Discipline
Use this field to record the research area the funding relates to.
Funder-Name
A field to record the name of the organisation that gives the funding, e.g. “Wellcome Trust”. Funder names are also used by Dimensions to retrieve richer metadata.
Funder-Reference
This field should be used to store the reference string used by the funder to identify the grant. Almost all funders will give awarded grants a reference for internal use e.g. WEL392093. It can get confusing when funding models are complicated. For example, at the Research Councils they would version the grants if the funding transferred from a PI. e.g. MRC301293/1 and MRC301293/2. It is also possible that large/long grants (e.g. belonging to programmes) might have a different value given out each year e.g. WEL392093-2017 and WEL392093-2018. Funder references are also used by Dimensions to retrieve richer metadata.
Institution-Reference
Institutions may sometimes wish to use an internal reference to identify the grant.
Funder-Type
This field is likely to be defined by the institution and could possibly include categories such as ‘charity’, ‘research council’, ‘government - NIH’, etc.
Funding-Type
Funders give out different types of grants i.e to support different types of activity. Examples could be Fellowship, Seed, etc.
Associated-Identifiers
Use this field to store a list of external identifiers (e.g. PubMed IDs) of publications that were created as a result of the grant the field belongs to.
Labels
Grants in Elements can be assigned Elements labels, using either one of the available label schemes or the creation of custom ones. This field enables the storage of values that belong to one of these label schemes.
