Manage Journals and JCR, SNIP and SJR Data
This article outlines how to manage the Journal object, which was introduced to facilitate accurate reporting of publishing activity within journals and permit more detailed deposit advice. This functionality is controlled via System Admin > Data category settings > Journals > Manage journals. Depending on how many modules enabled, the Journals menus may not be visible unless the right scroll icon (>) is used. Here you will find three menu items:
Manage Journals: You can view existing journal objects, assign labels to them, manage deposit and publisher advice, and manage the additional of manual records for journals
Journal Lists: You can import JCR and custom journal lists
Roles: You can manage who has the ability to manage journal objects and link to the pages where you can manage deposit advice
Manage Journals
View, sort and filter the journals within Elements
Add a new journal using the button on the top right side of the page.
Click on the journal title to manage the information in that record. Each Journal is made up of records from the sources of journal data and displayed as a data source. Data can be curated or modified data by adding a manual record to an existing title. To do this, click the Add manual record link. Journal records from external sources cannot be modified. Adding journal deposit advice or linking to publisher deposit advice requires membership of the appropriate module role. See the Roles section below for more details.

Manage JCR data
Your institution's set of JCR Impact Factors can be uploaded to Elements. The ability to do this requires that you have a subscription to the Clarivate product called "InCites" and that you have "InCites Connectivity" entitled in your Elements license.
Note: You will need to contact Clarivate to acquire the JCR file. Ask your account manager or submit a request through their support desk.
Note: Only one year of data can be included in the Elements system at a time. Older Impact Factor data is not available through Elements.
Once you have the data from Clarivate, edit it to create a headless CSV file with six columns:
ISSN
Impact Factor
5 Year Impact Factor
Full journal title
Title20 (the twenty character journal abbreviation)
ISO Abbreviation (the title created using ISO standard rules for title words)
To upload the CSV file, click the "Choose file" button, select the file and click the "Import" button.
After uploading the file, go to System admin > Data category settings > Outputs > Display journal metrics and check the "Override" checkbox at the top of the page.
Please see attached (JCR data example.csv) for sample CSV file.
Manage the custom journal list
At the moment journals bulk uploaded into the manual source are of the same source as manually created records on journals. For this reason we advise against bulk uploading custom journals if you have already been manually curating individual journal records. If this becomes a problem we can consider splitting the source in two to avoid the conflict.
Please provide a headless CSV file with two columns:
ISSN values
Journal titles
Please note the following
That whilst the data is uploaded instantly, it can take some time to synchronise with the rest of the system. The synchroniser controls updates these items, they are updated slowly in batches and progress should be reported on the Manage journal data page.
It is not possible to correct an ISSN or remove a journal entry via this page. You can correct a journal title by uploading a new CSV file with the amended text.
If Journals are not matched by ISSN then a manual record will be added.
If a manual record exists, then it will be overwritten.
If there are multiple ISSN, then the latter will overwrite the former one.
While Elements does not impose a limit, there may be some browser limits with regard to file size.
If you want a title with commas, then the title must be surrounded by double quotes.
SNIP and SJR Lists
Roles
Individuals can be given the rights to curate institutional deposit advice for specific journal titles or publisher deposit advice (which applies to a number of journals from a single publisher) at System admin > Data category settings > Journals > Manage category roles. This is distinct from the role to management of general deposit advice, which is configured at Open access > Deposit advice > Manage roles. Associating deposit advice with journals requires both roles.
FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I uploaded a SJR file which states that ### records failed, how can I find out why it failed?
A. Most of these errors will be caused by invalid ISSN's or Null values in the imported file, on the bottom of the import page there will be a section that indicates the reason for the failure. Please raise a support ticket if would like us to check your import file - attach the file and cut and paste the failure message.
Q. The JCR csv file I am using has no ISSN's for some Journal titles and 2 rows with the same ISSN - what should I do?
A. Remove duplicated rows and remove rows with empty ISSN values. If the ISSN of the Journal has changed replace it.
Q. The SJR csv file has 2 rows with the same ISSN and different SJR values - what should I do?
A. Pick one and delete the other. Links to the most recent SJR List is available in the SNIP and SJR How to article.
