Controlled vocabulary/labels on the Profile page

Edited

Elements supports the capture of controlled vocabularies or labels. Similar to the label schemes in Publications, these labels can be used to enhance a Profile page with skills, expertise or any other at-a-glance information institutions wish to capture. These labels can are then made available to public-facing institutional web pages or VIVO via the Elements API.

Adding a controlled vocabulary

To enable this functionality a label scheme must be configured to use a controlled vocabulary (an institutionally-defined list of values for selection) and the “Researcher’s profiles” option must be enabled on the label scheme’s configuration page.

Adding values to a Researcher Profile

Once enabled and a controlled vocabulary uploaded, researchers can add and update values on their profile page clicking the pencil icon by the label scheme.

For longer label lists, there is a search function at the top.

Once saved, label values will be displayed on a user’s profile under their photo and Overview section.

A few notes about using label schemes with researcher profiles:

  • More than one scheme may be enabled for use with researcher profiles, allowing the capture of information across a variety of themes.

  • A label scheme may be enabled for use concurrently with Researcher profiles as well as other records in the system (publications, grants, etc.); however, features such as storing percentages for label values and setting categorisation schemes will not take effect.

  • Text description may be supplied for label values, which will be displayed upon hover.

  • Individuals impersonating a user can only see the controlled vocabulary if they are granted Label editor permission for the label scheme.
