External Links on Publications

What external links are included on Publications?

Publications displayed on Discovery (on both Expert and Equipment profiles) offer up to five link-out items:

  1. A DOI link

  2. A Dimensions badge

  3. An Altmetric badge

  4. A Repository “DOWNLOAD PDF” link or a GetFTR “VIEW/GET PDF” link

  5. A “VIEW MORE INFO” link (link to more information about this item)

How does the DOI link work?

The DOI link takes the user to the publication's page on the publisher's website. A link is displayed for every publication in Discovery that has a non-null DOI value.

Note: Elements finds the DOI value in the following way: Elements orders all of the records of the publication according to the system source precedence order, and then takes the first non-null value in a DOI field from any of these records. If the DOI fields in all the records are null, the publication is pushed to Discovery with no DOI value.

How do the Dimensions and Altmetric badges work?

Dimensions and Altmetric badges link the user to their respective webpages where further metrics details of the publication can be found. To display these badges, a publication needs a non-null DOI value. Elements sends the Dimensions/ Altmetric APIs the the DOI, and if that DOI is recognised by either provider, a badge will be rendered.

These badges can be displayed or disabled across all Discovery pages, but additional configuration is required. Please contact our support site if you'd like to change the configuration.

How does the Repository
Download PDF link work?

Where possible, Discovery offers a downloadable full-text or preview of the full-text via a “DOWNLOAD PDF” link.

To display such links, Discovery configuration needs to have repository PDF downloads enabled. Please contact our support site if you'd like to change the configuration.

The “DOWNLOAD PDF” link is rendered when a repository PDF url can be supplied by Elements. To do this, Elements considers all deposited files within all items in all RT2-sources relevant for the publication. Only files which meet the following criteria are considered:

  • The items that contain the files are marked as “public” in the repositories.

  • The file is marked as “public” and “not embargoed”.

  • The file has a MIME type of “application/pdf”.

  • The file version is not “Supporting information”.

When there are multiple files in consideration, Elements selects the url of the top file based on file version in the following precedence order:

  1. Published version

  2. Accepted version

  3. Submitted version

  4. [other/ no version value]

Note that clients using Elements v6.8+ can configure file version names for deposit. When the default version names are changed, additional configuration is required for them to be pushed to Discovery because the logic above is hard-coded. Please see this support article for guidance.

If there are still multiple files available, Elements selects the file that was deposited most recently.

How does the GetFTR View/Get PDF link work?

If the Download PDF link is not available, where possible, Discovery offers a downloadable full-text or preview of the full-text via a GetFTR “VIEW/GET PDF” link.

To display such links, Discovery configuration needs to have GetFTR PDF links enabled. Please contact our support site if you'd like to change the configuration.

This link looks similar to the DOWNLOAD PDF link and displays either "VIEW PDF" or "GET PDF". The links are rendered when Elements cannot supply a url from the repository (see above for the logic). To render this link, the publication needs to have a DOI. This DOI is sent to a GetFTR API, which renders a link if 1) the DOI is recognised by GetFTR and 2) access to the full-text or a preview of the full-text is allowed. Otherwise no link will be rendered.

See below on how Element finds the DOI value.

How does the View More Info link work?

The View More Info nk takes the user to the publication's page in the repository or on other sites. It displays the first non-null url value from the following fields according to system precedence list (in the following order):

  1. Public URL: the first item that has a non-null public URL from all the items of all the repository data sources attached to the publication. Files from RT1 data sources will be considered first, followed by all the RT2 sources (according to system source precedence).

  2. Author URL: from the highest precedent (according to system source precedence) publication record only.

  3. Publisher URL: from the highest precedent (according to system source precedence) publication record only.

  4. If all of the above fields result in a null value, no link will be displayed.

Other External Links in Discovery

What other external links are available in Discovery?

All other objects on a user or equipment profile (grants, teaching and professional activities) can have up to one “LEARN MORE” link.

Similarly, the DESCRIPTION section on ABOUT tab of an equipment profile can have up to one "LEARN MORE" link that takes the user to an external site. This is rendered if there is a value in the "URL" field in the highest precedent record.

How are the links on data objects configured?

An administrator can determine which url field is used for these links via the "Key URL" field in the "Characteristic Fields" section of the data category configuration page.
Elements takes this value from the highest precedent record.

To update the field for grant type 'grant':

  1. Navigate to System Admin > Data Category Settings > Grants > Manage Grant Types

  2. Select the relevant grant type (e.g. grant) to edit it'

  3. In the Characteristic Fields section, select an option from the Field to Use for Key URL dropdown list

  4. Scroll to the end of the Properties panel and click on Save Properties
